Sadly another RIP

While TBSITW was on holiday recently she sent me a text message to direct me to an obituary of the husband of an old school friend (not old, of course, we are still just “girls”). She had spotted that there was a fuller version on-line than in the paper, which is what I get.

He was young to die, but had been ill for some time. He had a very distinguished career in public service; I followed it tangentially in the letters my friend sent every Christmas. It was always fascinating to hear from her as she was not just a “spouse”, she had a life of her own which she managed to run very much alongside her husband. I hope to hear that she has felt able to continue with that life. My sympathies and thoughts are with her.

Ah yes, the toll starts; prior to this, one fellow former school pupil from the year before mine, one from the same year (about 4 years ago) and now my friend's husband. They say you start reading the Marriages column and then the Births Column and lastly the Deaths column. Nowadays, the marriages and births do not necessarily happen in that order. These days I read the Deaths column to check if I am still alive....
