Yesterday, I managed to fit in a Tesco delivery, two loads of washing and a most enjoyable game of Scrabble.
Back to the ranch and I boiled potatoes for potato salad. Once cold, I cut them up into a large bowl and added chopped shallots, chopped parsley and chopped chives.
Looked in the freezer, but no cooked bacon., so took some out, defrosted it and then fried it and, after it cooled, trimmed it of fat and added it to the rest. Mixed it all up with Helmanns mayonnaise and, lo, potato salad.
This I served with a good slice of pot roast silverside removed from the freezer the night before and left to defrost.
Along with this, I served iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, spring onions and cucumber.
This evening I served the same meal, accompanied by a glass of Fleurie.
There is a story to go with the Fleurie. I was ordering a case of wine, unusually choosing bottles rather than taking a pre-mixed case and thought the Fleurie was a very good price, so I ordered 3 bottles.
No wonder the price was good. The "bottles" were half bottles.
Never mind, the wine tasted very good.
I mentioned before that TBSITW gave me some Molton Brown shower gel.
When I came back from the Day Hospital, and went into the bathroom, this wonderful smell greeted me.
At the Day Hospital I am starting to see some real progress. Sadly, so are others and I got a letter today saying that as of next week I shall be going only once a week.
Bet this is the thin end of the wedge...

Back to Normal
This morning was catch up time with the washings.
I went down to the laundry room at 7.40 with 2 out of 3 bags to find the room busy and all three machines "booked". This was somewhat unexpected as you are not permitted to start a wash before 8am.
By dint of going up and down stairs and taking a book with me, I have now finished the three washes (washed, dried and put away.)
I pressed a lovely cashmere scarf given to me by TBSITW as the edges down the length rolled over. I also ironed two handkerchiefs.
Putting the iron away I knocked my left hand.
That was another trip upstairs for some Chinese ointment to apply.
Now I give no credence to homeopathy and other woo but when TBSITW and I were on holiday in China we were taken to a Chinese medicine place near Hangzhou. (We described this, among ourselves, as another shopping opportunity.)
We were in a group of about 20, many of whom were doctors.
Among other things, we were given a demonstration of a chain being held in a fire until it was red hot moving to white hot. One of the demonstrators then briefly held the chain. After that he applied this ointment and suddenly the pain was gone.
One of the doctors had a good look at the man's hand and said afterwards that, although there was no blistering, there was underlying tissue damage.
Nonetheless we bought some.
I still have some in a little pot and was very glad to have it to apply to the burn of this morning: the pain is almost gone, as is the blister.

Another Wash....
After Church, I went to do two washing loads. When I got down to the laundry room, there was one tumble dryer in use, but no washing machine. I loaded my dark wash into my favourite machine and was very tempted to load the bedclothes into a different one as the place was so quiet.
Just as well I didn’t as within very short order the rest of the machines were in use and my second wash was sitting all very smug in front of the first.
By the time my first wash was washed and into the drier, my second wash was ready to go into the washing mashing and by the time the second wash was finished, the first wash was dry, so I put it into the drier and just over an hour later it was all dry and put away.
Why then did I feel as though I had been run over by a truck?
I had a nice phone call from elder son on Friday. Sadly he is again nursing a bout of bronchitis. I hope to see him and all the family some time over the festive season.

A busy Friday
Yesterday I got up after another fitful night and went for my doctor’s appointment. When I told her about the pain and sleeplessness she has upped the dose of one of the tablets I am taking and to see how that does. If it doesn’t improve things, I have just to call her and she will try another, but similar, drug. She is reluctant to introduce something completely new. I am not surprised when I consider the list of drugs I am on. I asked if she wanted to issue all my repeats as they would be up for renewal just before Christmas.
Done.
So, off I went to the pharmacy next door and waited for a short while to pick up my carrier bag full.
Back home, and shortly after, my two cleaning ladies arrived. On top of leaving everything sparkling, one changed a light bulb in the bedroom and put back a number of photograph albums.
Home made soup for lunch, and then I forced myself upright and took the two remaining loads of washing downstairs. After the first load was done and into the tumble drier, I put on the second load then came upstairs to join some of the ladies for a cup of tea and a biscuit.
Not to mention a chat!
Following that all I had to do was collect the first load, now dry and bring the second load (3 jumpers) back upstairs to dry flat.
When I came home on Thursday I found a letter addressed to Grandma Moot at my correct address. I am known as Grandma Mammouth by my grandchildren as I always used to pop over to France and shop there when I lived in the south of England. The oldest grandchild was then quite young and he shortened it to Grandma Moot. Bet it gave the postman a giggle.
Inside was a beautiful thank you letter with apologies because it was late as he and the family had been moving house

Bangers and Mash
Yesterday was a quiet day. I had 2 peppers (bell peppers, capsicums) delivered with the organic veg box goodie bag.
I decided to make stuffed peppers and had a look through my fridge, store cupboard and freezer. I have never done this before, but made it up as I went along to achieve the right sort of flavour and consistency.
The recipe is on my recipe blog.
The next thing was to tackle the sweet potato.
Prior to that, of course, I had to tackle a washing. Now, for once I wakened early as my feet were so sore and no matter what I did, I could not go back to sleep, so I reckoned I might as well make a virtue out of necessity.
I took the washing down at 7.45 with the Times magazine. The laundry is out of bounds till 8 am. When I got there I was able to choose the machine I wanted and at 8 o’clock on the dot set it going. When it was finished I loaded it into my favourite dryer and went away for an hour. On returning, my washing was dry, so I folded it and placed it all in a bag to take up top my flat. By this time it was not quite 11 am and not one person had been near the laundry but me. On returning to my flat it took only a few minutes to put it all away.
Yesterday evening, I had taken 3 sausages out of the freezer, so I reckoned it was time for bangers and mash. In the absence of further information, I decided to treat the sweet potato like potato and peeled it, cut it into pieces and boiled it for 20 minutes before mashing it with a knob of butter. Then I cooked the potato, Swede and carrot and mashed them together with the sweet potato. After placing a serving on a plate, I placed the plate in the microwave for a minute as the sweet potato had been cooked earlier.
This was absolutely delicious and I am freezing the rest of the mashed mixture for a few weeks till wanted again.

Lazy Saturday
Went last evening to the bridge coaching class. I did not really feel up to it, but, as she (my partner) had said she would be going, I went along. It was a good training session, but of course, late home, but not too bad as it was just before 10pm.
Slept quite well.
Today is another beautiful day, but having already decided to have a day doing nothing, I felt impelled to carry out a particular chore.
I'll give you three guesses...
...
Yes, you were right first time.
I did my washing. I had found it rather painful to walk and so had let it slide for almost 3 weeks, so I went down and - YES! there was nobody there and no machines in use. So, I put on my large white wash in the big machine. then, seeing there was still nobody there, I put my dark wash in the next machine for a quick wash.
I came down after half an hour and put the quick wash onto a long spin.
By this time both the other washing machines were in use...
After a couple of minutes someone else came down, only to find no washing machine.
Oh the guilt at using two machines!
At least it was a nice guy who stayed and chatted until my spin was finished.
Now at last it is all washed, dried, ironed and put away,
so now it is a lazy Saturday....

Trying to Become a Good Housewife
I started off this morning with a washing "oh, not again!" you cry, but I was thinking about what I was doing as I put the wash into the tumble dryer and carried two wool jumpers that can't be tumble dried upstairs and laid them on a large towel on my bed.
So, what I was thinking was that I was actually starting to get organised with cycling my jumpers. Instead of just hanging clean ones away next to others (which were clean of course, but not newly washed) I am hanging the washed ones on the other side of the wardrobe, with the idea that I wear only the ones that are on the not-washed side of the wardrobe.
And to think it took me 67 years to get that far!
Mind you there was a long time in my life when I didn't have enough clothes to make that necessary....
So, that done I went to prepare the evening meal and was torn between making a macaroni cheese or a potato salad. I decided on the potato salad and had all the work done (including frying the lardons) when I discovered that I had no shallots or even onions. So the cooked potatoes are now in a jug covered with foil and the lardons are on a covered plate.
So it was back to square one again.
Now the macaroni is boiled and the cheese is grated, so all I have to do now is make the cheese sauce. I felt I was due a rest at this point so I came to talk to you lot out there.
Never mind, shallots will arrive tomorrow and otherwise nearly all the work is done for that meal too.

A Quiet Day.....
..... after all the excitement of yesterday, catching up with blogs, washings, and my 2 readers know how much I love that latter job ;-(
I am in the process of cooking my lamb mince and have prepared the onions and mushrooms. The potatoes, carrots and kohl rabi are in the sink awaiting my input with a peeler and a knife. I have discovered that it makes sense for me to prepare 2 days' worth of veg and keep half under water in a jug in the fridge (Laziness is the mother of invention).
I forgot to mention yesterday that I received a most delightful and unexpected extra birthday gift - a tail feather from the neighbourhood peacock, so that I now have two. I spotted him at the weekend walking purposefully across my little patch of grass towards my herb and flower pots. I bet he was looking for my, now non-existent, parsley and a tail feather must have got caught, probably in one of the lavender plants - I have two, bought last year at a bargain price of two for £5 and they are really growing apace.

Washing and cooking
Today has been a beautiful day with the sun shining, and, as usual, I was stuck indoors doing my washing - first wash, my bedding (from a double bed) and other light coloureds, then my dark coloureds.
Went down to the laundry room and fell really lucky as all the machines were empty so I was able to take the big washer to do my double bedding and then later did my dark wash.
Lunch was more of the spinach soup.
Planned to make rhubarb crumble and custard but caved in to the laziness gene and plan on making stewed rhubarb with ice cream.
I have been rather wobbly on my pins today, staggering into furniture and walls and so on - such a pain. And I can assure you that I have never descended to taking anything stronger than orange juice or tea in the morning

A Busy Sunday
Up and off to Church. As I left home I was greeted by the rather strange sight of one half of the car park wet and the other side completely dry.
Discovered I must be a very lucky person as So many birds had dropped little gifts on my car.
Found the walk into the Church a bit difficult and that I was inclined towards losing my balance - I think that is my punishment for doing too much a couple of days ago.
Our minister is back from a week's holiday in Rome, so decided to use readings from St Paul's letters to the Romans.
This afternoon I have done my dark wash and got a couple of jumpers washed too.
A lot of walking and standing, so I am making comfort food for tonight (and enough left over for three more meals - (see my recipe blog if you are interested in making Macaroni Cheese).

All Systems Go....
... well more or less. Slept very well last night (can't think why!) and got up as usual this morning. I am a bit sore, particularly my knees (from the carpet burns) and my back.
I was planning to have a day of rest to recover, but then reckoned that, if I ws going to feel a bit under the weather, I might as well get my washing done.
Having got it washed, dried and put away, I don't feel any the worse for it, and I don't need to worry about the next washing for a few days, which is good.
I went to the Bridge Club on Monday, to discover that my partner and I last week came FIRST!!! Played with another different one today. It would be nice to have a regular partner so you get comfortable with each other's bidding, but it is also fun with different partners.

Down - And Up Again...
...physically and metaphorically.
Wednesday evening I hung up my jacket on the back of the hall cupboard door, lost my balance and went down on my tail end. No harm done and quickly up again using the arm of the settee.
Yesterday was overcast, but still pleasantly mild. I did my usual of up, shower, wait for hair to dry then finish dressing.
Then I made my Golden Krispie recipe.
Sweet and crispy at the same time, who has the willpower to stop eating before they get sick?
Well
Just.
My wonderful cleaners came yesterday, and now the flat is sparkling. They also did the time change on my kitchen clock and re-hung it – a new hole was necessary, as the nail kept getting pushed through into the hollow wall.
One of them is a brand new granny. She was showing me a picture of the baby who looked just so gorgeous. I could almost get broody again.
But there are several very good reasons why this is unlikely in the extreme!
They also changed my bed for me.
After they left I went through to join the exercise class having their cup of tea (in the hopes of scrounging one too!) I took along some of my krispie cakes but the tea was over and only the two washers - up were there. Still they greeted the krispie cakes with glad cries of joy.
This morning it is another beautiful day, white fluffy clouds in a blue sky.
So why have I gone and got a sore throat?
Never mind, I got on and did the washing, falling lucky and getting the big washing machine and the big tumble drier.
Outside it is beautiful in the sun, but the breeze is quite strong and cold. Typical good spring day.

Throwing a Strop!
Went to the final physiotherapy class today, and was also a bit tired from keeping the exercises going each day.
However the great news is that someone else is going to conduct the same class once a week which is brilliant.
Unfortunately the new class is going to be on a Tuesday, which was usually my best free day for hair and dental appointments.
So I phoned the hairdresser to make a new appointment and told him why – the response was a change to the day following.
And then he told me that there would be a 20% surcharge for changing my appointment.
Felt really like throwing a strop and finding another hairdresser.
Faces and noses and cutting of one from the other came to mind, so I didn’t – at least not this time.
Wakened during the night to a rather sore throat. Usual treatment of paracetamol and plenty of fluids instigated.
As soon as I got home I took a bag of washing down to the washing machine, and it is now washed, dried and put away. This was well worth doing as it was my bedding plus underwear.

Continued......
After the flowers arrived, I grabbed my things and went to the class. Not wonderful weather, still a wind and rain.
Class, in spite of everything, was good. I managed to keep the impetus going, and really enjoyed not just the class but the group - they were all so concerned and welcoming.
Came home and decided that doing a washing wasn't going to make me feel worse, so off I went and was in luck, there was an empty machine. So all washed, dried and put away.
Then through to the lounge to have a cup of tea. The milkman called (and there was a queue waiting to propose on the 29th February.)
Apart from the bruising to the head, I have really got off lightly.
While we were drinking our tea, our attention was drawn to the windows. The weather has turned from unpleasant to really wild, wet and windy. The rain was being blown horizontally by the wind.

Weather and Washing
How about that for a touch of alliteration?
Today the skies are grey, but light. There is a bit of a breeze, but no strong wind. It is dry, and does not even look like rain.
In other words, a very nice day for the end of January.
Perhaps that is what spurred me on to do my least favourite chore, two loads of washing (but I think it might have had something to do with a severe lack of clean underwear).
However it is good exercise as the laundry room is down one flight of stairs and then along a long corridor, so you go there (and, hurrah there is a machine free!) and put on the first load, note the time and return to the flat. After an hour you go down again to put on the long spin and then to remove things that are not for the tumble dryer. You transfer the spun clothes to a tumble dryer and load the next wash into the vacated washing machine.
Back home and wait for about an hour at which time you put the second wash on to a long spin and remove the dry clothes from the dryer, fold them and put them into a carrier bag. At this point you empty the water container from the tumble dryer and clear the fluff.
By this time the second wash is ready to transfer to the newly vacated tumble dryer, so back home with the first wash and put it all away.
After about an hour you go down to the laundry room again and collect and fold your second wash, empty the water container and clear the fluff. Back home again with only the dried wash to put away.
Phew!

A Chance Missed
Today I have been doing the work I had promised, the dark wash and the bedding wash. Came upstairs from the laundry room and just sat down to draw breath when the phone rang, and it was daughter calling to invite me over for lunch. At that point, I still had to put the dark wash onto a fast spin, followed by a transfer to a tumble drier and then load the bedding into the vacated machine. It is often quite difficult to find a washing machine free here, so really couldn’t afford to give up this chance (and anyway the dark wash would still take a further hour to dry.
This is a great pity as I very much enjoy my visits to daughter and her family; however we have fixed a date for next Wednesday (her day off from work).
Daughter in fact had been planning to call an hour earlier, but got caught up in reading my blog as she likes to know how I am getting on and what I have been up to!
My ribs (or the “muscles” over them are still painful when I take a deep breath in and also on turning over in bed). However I see no point in doing anything about it, as the most that would possibly be done is strapping and I think I would find that at least as uncomfortable – (can’t hurt that much, then).
Sitting here at my computer I look out and am pleased to see that the weather is dry, although the tree opposite is fairly moving in the wind. The leaves are well turning to their autumn colours, and look so attractive.
Washing finished I went to cook some mince that I took from the freezer last night. Now that it had defrosted, I was able to determine that, while the label (from the farm shop) Said Highland Beef, Beef mince, what was actually there was chunks of beef for making a casserole.
Just to show that anything goes for my famous casseroles(I used to be known as the casserole queen), I looked in the fridge to see what ingredients I could use:
First I tossed the beef in flour in a poly bag and left it to one side.
Then:
half celeriac. chopped (left the other half under water.)
2 carrots, chopped
2 onions, chopped
half a pack of mushrooms, chopped.
Sauteed the onions in a mixture of a flavoured oil (part of a Christmas present) and butter
Added the vegetables (not mushrooms) and stirred around in the pan
Added the floured meat and gave a quick saute.
Poured over a pint of beef stock made using a Kallo beef stock cube
Poured on a bit of red wine (from an opened bottle)
After about an hour added the mushrooms.
Left all to cook for about 3 hours on a very low heat

Luncheon
... well, not so posh, but more lunch
Today has been excellent in my small corner of the blogosphere. I have been delighted with the responses to my tags by mousie and the shrink. Apparently neither had been tagged before, and both (like me) have an innate dislike of that sort of thing, but the fact that the subject was books (and, of course my delightful personality ;-) ) hooked them. It is very interesting to read people’s choices of books in the different categories. Reckon I am somewhat pretentious and a. certainly called my bluff by arranging to send me a Fred Vargas book in French – it has not been translated into English, so I can’t cheat!
Today has been particularly good in that I took L and Mr L out for lunch to a local garden centre. When I called to pick them up, I was amazed to see how much more work they have done in their garden since I last went there.
We enjoyed our lunch then had a good look round the Garden Centre’s Christmas exhibits; they have put on an excellent show, no tat but all good quality stuff, much reminiscent of Austrian and German Christmas markets. I bought a stair of candles (electric) as they look really nice in the window before Christmas and the last set I had lost all its bulbs over the years, with no more replacements to be found. I also bought (not from the Christmas bit) some stems of (artificial) pussy willow, to put in a vase in an unused space in my bathroom. I have been looking for something appropriate to put there, and now reckon I have finally found it.
Okay, from the sublime to the gor blimey. This morning I decided to sort out all my dirty washing as it was overflowing the basket. Turned out to be 3 good loads; one the whites, one the darks and the third the bedding. So, back I came from dropping my friends off and carrying in a gift from them of a lovely bunch of flowers which I have snipped and put in a vase with water and plant food, then I had really no option but to make a start on the washing. We are allowed to use only one machine at a time, so the first load washed, then into the dryer, then put away. Should really do another one, but sufficient unto the day….
See what an exciting life I lead!
