Today I went to the Farmers' Market. Luckily the rain held off, although that wouldn't have stopped me. There has been a lot of publicity recently on the subject of organic food and food miles. I must confess to being sold on both ideas, particularly organic food. I really don't fancy the idea of eating all those hormones, weedkiller, artificial fertiliser etc that can be found in food these days.
Thus a Farmers' Market makes sense. I have learned a very important lesson; go with a list either written or mental, otherwise you spend far too much which is all right once in a while but not on a regular basis. Of course cheap sausages and mince and so on are much cheaper than fillet steak! At least most stalls only take cash:-) I also keep a look out for any bargains or anything interesting. Once I bought pork cheeks, and didn't know what to do with them, but decided on a slow braise with onions and carrots - yummy.
Today I bought pork sausages, bacon, shin of beef and lean mince along with new potatoes, carrots, beetroot, a lovely big cauliflower and broccolli. Sounds good to me. Now some is for the freezer, and some to be cooked over the course of the weekend, probably sausages for tea with potatoes and peas, and I'll make some chicken soup with carrots, onions and rice tomorrow.
Just as well I had a good brunch of Arbroath Smokie with poached egg (a double yolker) as the thought of all that food makes me hungry.
