Recently Dr Grumble wrote about The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, which I subsequently bought and read. It is a very moving (but not tear-jerking) story of (and by) a young survivor of a very severe stroke.
This morning my copy of the magazine The Oldie arrived and I read some of it, to come across an article in the section Modern Life which mentioned the self same book. but also another book Robert McCrum's "My Year Off".
The article also mentioned the InteractReading Service, whereby currently unemployed actors go and read to stroke patients, and the benefits that seem to ensue..

Ooh, I've always meant to read The Diving Bell - now that you've given it a positive review, I'll definitely get myself a copy.
They also say that talking or reading to people in a coma is helpful...
Hi Calavera, thanks for your comment - you wouldn't be Cal (whose blog I read faithfully?
