Be Careful What You Wish For.....

.....

I learned to play bridge way back in 1959 or 60, then didn’t play for a number of years, until I started to play with a group of friends. We played Rubber Bridge, with very little attention to any system, but enjoyed the social aspect of it.

Later I read an advert for a weekend course at a hotel led by a good Bridge player, and hastened to apply. I went to these weekends on several occasions and played with the same partner. We got really quite good playing together, although unfortunately she lives at the opposite side of the country to me.

At last I got to join a near by Bridge Club and found a partner. I had the audacity to think that I was a better player than she was and very much wished for a partner who was a better player than me, so that I could be challenged to improve my play.

Then I moved here and it took some time to get an introduction to the local Bridge Club, when I was fortunate to be partnered with another new member, whom I was told was a player at my own level. However, I still wanted to be partnered with a better player.

This week my partner did not turn up, and so I was partnered with a very experienced player.

Be careful what you wish for….

I came to realise that I am still a beginner and should stop feeling superior to other players. Mind you, I think I played quite well in spite of everything and certainly came away with some new aspects to ponder.

Next Tuesday evening is the Club Christmas Hat night and I have been fortunate to find a partner for that event. So I have only next Monday to get my act together (and to ponder on what to wear!)

I have also been honoured to be invited to become a formal member of the Club.

Hello, and congratulation an becoming a regular member of the club. That will be fun for you. I have a question that I hope doesn't sound too ignorant. You said you were going to the Club Christmas Hat. What is that? I gather it is a special themed party?

Wait a minute! I reread the post. You are going to the club Christmas Hat night. Pretty hats for the evening.

The Hat Night is still a bridge night but with added fun - yes, you tend to put on a bit of a nice party outfit (if you can find one!)

I'll report on it after it happens, but part of it is that you don't play with your usual partner and names are drawn out of a Hat.

More next week.

Since I've never been able to comprehend any card game more advanced than snap, I admire anyone who can play any sort of bridge. The concept of being a good player is completely beyond me :)
