More Vegetable Shopping and a Dinner Guest

The title in chronological order rather than in order of importance!

Yesterday was a busy but really good day. In the morning I got my act together and got up in time to make a loaf of bread before lunch. I then looked at the soup I had taken from the freezer, and reckoned that the high proportion of cream had made it curdle, so I took another soup from the freezer (courgette) and defrosted it in the microwave. I had taken some of my beef casserole from the freezer the night before.

So now to work.

Defrosted soup into pan
Casseroles (from 4 single serving containers) into another pan.
Potatoes and carrots peeled and into portions, into pan and covered with water.
Sink cleaned out.
Washing up bowl filled with hot soapy water and 5 freezer dishes plus lids washed, dried and put away.

S. came to take me to a farm shop (to show me how to get there) I bought loads of veg: potatoes, carrots (purple ones and yellow ones) fennel, vine tomatoes, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, mushrooms, flat leaf parsley, satsumas and strawberries (wouldn’t usually at this time of year, but they looked so good). And it was all so cheap!

This is where I am in something of a dilemma. Can I really afford to eat virtually all organic? I shall certainly give the farm shop a few tries. They say they use very little chemicals.

On the way to the farm shop we went to a local garden centre as I was looking for something to make my flat look more festive. Was rather disappointed at what they had on show, but managed to get some rather pretty tinsel, one strand red and one gold which I put over the mantelpiece, and also a rather pretty artificial flower arrangement, which is also on the mantelpiece.

After all this we took a detour to buy some ice cream to go with the strawberries, and then she drove me home.

So started laying the table, polishing the glasses and the cutlery, then flopped down in my comfy chair with a glass of something.

In the evening I had a guest for dinner. He is a friend of many long years standing and I see him usually twice a year; once he takes me out to dinner and the other time I cook for him. He brought with him two interesting looking of boxes, on top of one of which was the famous CHRISTMAS STOCKING! (more about this later.)

I am starting to get quite excited about Christmas, which this year will be spent with the best sister in the world and her partner. Daughter and her partner are coming along too, so it should be a good party.

Hello, Elaine, I am a 72 years old German woman and came around to your blog, having indicated that Bridge is one of my hobbies.

I just read a few of your posts and like your style of writing.

I wish you much success for your hat tournement. Our club is having its X-mas dinner with a tournament before on saturday.

Since I have not been too well these last weeks - knee trouble, if you know what I mean I didn't play much Bridge during the last weeks.

Congratulations on being a member now in your club. How many members are there?

Excuse any mistakes I made in the above, I am absolutely out of practice..... But I would love to post with you from time to time.

Have a nice evening - Love Klara

Hello, Klara, Your English is excellent. I really do not speak German, apart from a few words, although I am picking up on French again.

I am sorry about your ill health and hope it does not take too long to resolve.

Don't know how many members as I have only met a proportion so far.

Enjoy your Christmas dinner and tournament.

Hello Elaine, How wonderful to have a new friend through your blog postings - a German lady called Klara. I hope this is the start of some good correspondence between you two - you may have much in common - Bridge and sore knees! Love from your good friend S.

Hello, Elaine, what a surprise. I thought, my text was lost, since I couldn't find it anymore. Just for interest I had a look at your blog and there it was again. Thank you for writing so nicely.

Today I spent much time at the hairdresser*s. It was really necessary, since staying in bed much of the time does make one look any better.... It was the first day that my leg didn't hurt so much, I got an injection last week to be able to cope with X-mas.

As I read in the posting of your friend, you have leg trouble too. Your are quite right, old age is really a bitch. Have you had surgery already??

As too bridge, what system do you play? We usually use pretty old Acol, having played artificial (??) clubs ages before. In Germany they are mostly playing kind of Better Minor or Standard American.

I wish you a nice evening.
Love from Klara.

Hello Klara, good to hear from you again.

You will feel much better after having your hair done; trust me, I know this.

I play Acol, Strong 2, Weak 3, responding to 1NT, 2C asks for 4-card major, 2D or 2H asks for transfer (having 5 cards in that
suit yourself.)

Gerber (4C) then (5C)to ask for aces and kings.

All fairly basic as I have just come back to bridge and am getting to know a new club (which plays slightly differently from my last one
