This is another article from the booklet of memories collected here. I have chosen this one today as I am becoming increasingly deaf myself.
D is for Deaf
This means 'hard of hearing'
Being treated as Daft
Is oh! so wearing.
When you meet someone Deaf
Speak slow and clear,
Take your hands from your mouth
So they can see to 'hear'.
Do not turn your back or leave the room
(Even when returning soon)
As once you do conversation dies
(and who knows but you could be telling lies!)
Do not screech or scream or shout
We will not know what it's about.
Do have patience if we misunderstand
We are not stupid just short of a 'gland'!
If you follow this simple desire
Deaf and Hearing will get on like a house on fire!
