Well, the plumber didn't turn up in the morning, so phoned him at 12.30. He had obviously forgotten and was in no hurry to come, so I told him I would find someone else.
Phoned another plumber (24hrs on call, discount for OAPs (sounds good)), and he was here within half an hour. Turns out that the fitting at the back is wrong as the end at the wall has got pushed in after time, so that the connection could not be made. Remember the bathroom? (Pay attention at the back there.) The plumber who did the shower and laid the ceramic floor tiles must have found the same thing but he resolved it by stuffing the gap with toilet paper and then covering it with sealant!
Anyhow, this plumber went away and got a new joint and it is now fixed. Prompt, cheerful, friendly service. 2 hours work and a fee of £60. The one who did not turn up was charging a callout fee of £75, so I fell really lucky.
All tidied up now. Lucky we have a communal loo just along the corridor which I can use until it has dried.
p.s. he also fixed the loose handle on the cistern.
