Yesterday I went to the best sister in the world for dinner and a sleepover. This time she did all the cooking rather than Le Chef.
We started (after a glass or so of Noilly Prat for me and a G&T for her) with sliced wood pigeon on toast. For the main course we had roe venison with mashed potatoes and sprouting broccoli. Both courses were served with red wine.
I really envy them their wine glasses, which are small, so that you drink less than you think you are.
Pudding was sticky toffee pudding (home made) with local ice cream, served with a little sweet wine.
A good chat was held, in spite of the fact that Dozy Dinah (me) had forgotten her hearing aids.
The two dogs were very affectionate, especially the younger one, who has covered my trousers with hair and drool!
After all that I slept like a log till 8.30 and sat down to a glass of orange juice followed by a wonderful breakfast of crisp bacon, poached egg and tomatoes served with home made (by le chef) french bread.
I now know how to make proper poached egg. The secret is in some vinegar in the water, so the egg white puffs up and stays in one place, unlike mine which spread out all over the pan and fall apart when served up, leaving some of the white in the pan.
So back home on a really sunny day with a cold wind.
We have a "rule" of no presents to the adults now, but I said that if they did happen to be thinking of getting anything for me I would really like a photograph of the two of them and of the two dogs (separately or together) to add to my "rogues gallery".
I am going to make this same request to daughter and M and to elder son and wife. (I already have a lovely photo of younger son and wife in the gallery).
The gallery currently contains the aforementioned photo of younger son and wife, one of the best sister in the world and me, 1 each of the four grandchildren, and a group photograph.
The group one was taken in July 2001. I can date it almost precisely as I am sporting a sticking plaster on my neck.
If you look very closely you can see that it has a picture of a frog on it.
I liked it, because if any of the children asked me what it was for I would tell them it was because I had a frog in my throat.
In fact, it was covering my not-quite healed tracheostomy "hole"!
You can see why that photograph means so much to me.

Hello Elaine!
Happy Sunday to you. Am just now waiting for Bear to wake up so that we can have some coffee together, and I thought I'd pop over to your blog for a chat.
I love your descriptions of your meals and drinks... I love to read about food! And yes, the vinegar trick for great poached eggs is one my mother showed me - works like a charm!
I would like to share one of my favorite breakfast treats with you - it's easy to make, and so tasty. My dad used to make it for me when I was very young, and to this day it's one of my favorite comfort meals.
You take one or two slices of bread, butter them on both sides, and then cut them into bite-sized pieces.
In a frying pan, toast the buttered bread pieces until they are browned. In a mixing bowl, put four eggs and a dreep of cream and beat it with a fork until blended completely.
Pour the egg mixture over the buttery toast bites and prepare just as you would scrambled eggs, using a spatula to turn and mix the stuff as it cooks.
Because the bread is well toasted before the eggs arrive, it retains some of its shape and crunch, and the buttery goodness flavors the eggs as well.
(If you want to add chopped bacon to the egg mixture before adding it, it come out even crunchier and tastier!) Salt and pepper to taste before devouring.
Cheers!
- M
If you look very closely you will see................?
Am I the only one who sees no photograph, please?
Ah, very sorry, dickiebo, I haven't published the photograph as I prefer to keep anonymous.
I should have said "If one looks very closely......"
I was merely trying to indicate how, even almost 7 years later, I am so glad to be alive. Came quite close to not making it.......
I like the sound of Marcheline's breakfast treat, and will try that soon. Makes a change from standard "french toast". For the brits or aussies among your readers, french toast is lovely with a little Marmite or Vegemite spread on the bread first. Somehow I don't think your USA friends would like it, as they prefer a sweet, not savoury, french toast at breakfast.
The sticky toffee pudding sounds yummy. It has to be one of my favourite deserts!
Hi Elaine! Thanks for coming by! YIKES! I bet your chili was a little on the warm side! :)
I like the sound of your Rogue's Gallery! I think that.s what I'll call the family pictures int he hall! :)
I also like to read about your meals, they always sound so good!
Tell tbsitw thanks for stopping by!
I've always been curious about Vegamite since the '80s and the group "Men At Work" put out a song with Vegamite in it. I'm going to find some somewhere and try it! What tbsitw said about it on French toast sounded interesting.
