Yesterday was Bridge again; I really feel I am starting to get into the swing again and that my play of a hand has much improved. My defence needs quite a lot of work. Bidding is still proving to be something of a problem with my partner not recognising previously agreed conventions - thus landing me more than once in a very tough contract! However, I am still really enjoying it and am getting to know more of the regulars.
This morning I had an appointment with my GP about those wretched falls. Basically he was very thorough and eliminated things and left me thinking of a quote from The King and I -"is a puzzlement". He has prescribed thigh length elastic stockings which should help two things, firstly the poor peripheral circulation and secondly any possible drop in blood pressure on standing. He has given me a December appointment to see him again and see how I get on with the elastic stockings. If no joy with them, he will refer me to Medical Outpatients Clinic.
When I took the prescription for the elastic stockings through to the pharmacy next door, I had to get measured. The good news is that you have a choice of colour - and I chose black!

Just discovered this Blog - will be visiting again!
Hello Elaine, I have been reading your blog for a couple of weeks now. It has been interesting "getting to know" you. I hope all goes well with the leg problems and that the stockings prove to be benificial to you.
I'm curious about your comment about peripheral circulation and elastic stockings.
My father has recently been prescribed elastic stockings to help prevent varicose ulcers forming in his legs. Before he got them he had a Doppler test. I'm not absolutely sure why it was called a Doppler test, but in effect his systolic blood pressure was measured in his arms and in his feet and the ratio of foot BP to arm BP calculated. If foot BP had been less than ?90 ?80 percent of arm BP - because of poor circulation down to his feet - then compression of his legs - elastic stockings or bandaging - would have been less appropriate/ inappropriate. I thought this was because the compression would have made it more difficult for his heart to pump the blood down to his feet. However if your elastic stockings are going to help blood get to your feet I must have misunderstood something. I would be interested to know what.
Anyway I hope the stockings help you. Black will look pretty good with lots of things - much nicer than the "sand" colour (the colour of some white people's flesh) that my father chose.
ps do you need a suspender belt to keep them up? And if so, what happens if men need them?
pps if Americans call braces suspenders, what do they call suspender belts?
to elderly lady in training:
I'm afraid I can't be of any help there - had doppler test, then MRI scan and GP has prescribed elastic stockings in the full knowledge of their results. As I said "iis a puzzlement", but I'll give it a try - go back in three weeks.
Not supposed to wear suspenders.
Don't know what Americans call suspenders.
To sharon
Welcome to my blog.

It is indeed an honour to welcome your to my blog. I have been visiting yours for some time.
Elaine.. Americans call Braces (trouser holder upppers) suspenders :-)
Do you get to choose the pattern? You could have sexy fish net ones? hahahah
All is well here - visiting little brother tonight for dubious tea (Im taking my own in self defence)

To anonymous (anna), pay attention at the back there; I said I know that - what I want to know is what Americans call the things that hold up stockings
I've visited some very interesting sites in the last few minutes and have discovered that Americans call them "garter belts". Divided by a common language, eh?
