I was idly sitting thinking of nothing in particular, as you do, when I remembered a comment made by s. on my blog about school dinners. She wrote about Eve's pudding and custard and I could just picture it. Unlike the dreadful fool I enjoyed Eve's pudding and was remembering how thick the pudding" (ie sponge) bit had been and how thin the "Eve's" bit had been which would be why I put up with custard, in order to moisten it.
The Eve's bit?
Of course, the "apple" bit.
How could I reach my advanced years without working that out?

Although why the humble and perfectly good apple should have got attached to events in the Garden of Eden is beyond me. The fruit Eve took was the 'fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil'. No amount of apple eating has ever enhanced my knowledge of good and evil.
To mikeg - I did remember that, but I was also sure that the common assumption that it was the apple (which is what appears in many pictures) and hence was derivation of Eve's pudding. I accept that you can certainly outquote me, but I can still remember quite a bit.
